Examining the Mirative and Nonliteral Uses of Evidentials∗
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper presents an analysis of how evidentiality contributes to both the mirative and metaphorical interpretations of sentences. The connection between evidentiality and mirativity has received some attention in the literature, particularily in various language grammars and typological studies, yet the category of mirativity has still not found a place within any theory of meaning. In a nutshell, mirativity refers to the grammatical marking of a proposition as representing information which is new and perhaps surprising to the speaker (DeLancey 1997, 2001). A mirative interpretation is associated with the evidential ’ nakw in the Tsimshianic language, Gitksan (1):

Reconstructing Mirativity: Evidentiality, Information, and Deixis∗
The goal of this paper is to investigate the linguistic, psychological and cognitive properties of utterances that express the surprise of the speaker, with a focus on how grammatical evidentials are used for this purpose. This is often labeled in the linguistics literature as mirativity. While there has been a flurry of recent interest in mirativity, we still lack an understanding of how and w...
متن کاملA Clustering Approach for Nearly Unsupervised Recognition of Nonliteral Language
In this paper we present TroFi (Trope Finder), a system for automatically classifying literal and nonliteral usages of verbs through nearly unsupervised word-sense disambiguation and clustering techniques. TroFi uses sentential context instead of selectional constraint violations or paths in semantic hierarchies. It also uses literal and nonliteral seed sets acquired and cleaned without human s...
متن کاملA Clustering Approach for the Unsupervised Recognition of Nonliteral Language
In this thesis we present TroFi, a system for separating literal and nonliteral usages of verbs through unsupervised statistical word-sense disambiguation and clustering techniques. TroFi distinguishes itself by redefining the types of nonliteral language handled and by depending purely on sentential context rather than selectional constraint violations and paths in semantic hierarchies. TroFi ...
متن کاملActive Learning for the Identification of Nonliteral Language
In this paper we present an active learning approach used to create an annotated corpus of literal and nonliteral usages of verbs. The model uses nearly unsupervised word-sense disambiguation and clustering techniques. We report on experiments in which a human expert is asked to correct system predictions in different stages of learning: (i) after the last iteration when the clustering step has...
متن کاملEvidence Marking in Research Articles: An Investigation of its Sources and Relative Reliability through Quality Markers
Evidence occupies a paramount position in any logical endeavor and research article is consensually considered a predominant site of such an endeavor. One interesting area of rhetoric which addresses the source and reliability of evidence is quality metadiscourse. In this qualitative study, quality metadiscourse strategies (i.e., evidentials, hedges, boosters and disclaimers) are examined to in...
